Book review: The Business Idea Factory by Andrii Sedniev

Although this book is very thin, its content is rich and well-organized. This book addresses how to create successful business ideas, much like the bestselling classics such as A Technique for Producing Ideas by James Webb Young and How to Get Ideas by Jack Foster. In addition to those masterpieces of creating ideas, I strongly recommend this book as a valuable resource when you need inspiration or guidance on developing new ideas.

1. Use subconscious mind

We have a subconscious mind in the right brain and a conscious mind in the left brain. Remarkably, the creative right brain operates at least 2 million times faster than the analytical left brain. Therefore we should use this incredibly fast and creative right brain.

"All ideas are either modifications or combinations of the old ones."

How to use the right brain

To use the subconscious mind, we need two key elements; asking the right questions and sleep. Firstly we need to set a clear task for the right brain with appropriate questions. Once this is done, the right brain will work in 24/7 even while you sleep.

Find the appropriate questions that bring you ideas

Please note that if you don't get answers to your questions, your question might not be appropriate. In other words, when you find the right questions, it means you almost get a solution. A well-framed question naturally guides your mind toward creative answers.

5 Whys technique to find the right questions

How to find the right questions? The author shows "5 Whys" to change the abstraction layer of the question to search for the right questions.

5 Whys is the widely used technique described by Taiichi Ohno at Toyota Motor Corporation. The basis of Toyota's scientific approach is to ask "Why" five times every time you find a problem. This simple and powerful method not only reveals the root cause of the problem but also points directly to possible solutions.

Please explore another layer of questions and allow your subconscious mind to work on generating great ideas.

As I introduced in my favorite book, A Technique for Producing Ideas by James Webb Young, the core principle of creating ideas is:

2. Modify or combine ideas

Don't try to produce original ideas

The author emphasizes an important reminder - we should not aim for our original idea. Instead, we should focus on borrowing ideas and we don't need to be perfect but stick with continuous improvement.

Use SCAMPER tool

The author introduced SCAMPER which is a famous framework for brainstorming to create ideas.

  • Substitute

  • Combine
  • Adapt

  • Modify

  • Put other uses

  • Eliminate

  • Reverse or Rearrange

Using this framework encourages flexible thinking and opens the door to endless possibilities.

Thank you for reading this post. Again I would strongly recommend this book to get hints on how to create great ideas. As the subtitle of this book suggests "A World-Class System for Creating Successful Business Ideas" this book offers practical strategies to spark creativity and refine your ideas. So I'm confident you will find some tips to generate & improve your ideas.

Scold technique: How to Ensure Your Message is Heard

As parents or managers, it’s important to provide constructive feedback, but the way we communicate that feedback can make all the difference. Here are four tips on how to scold effectively and ensure your message is heard: 1. Scold confidently   When you scold someone, delivering your message with confidence is essential. Speaking hesitantly or uncertainly makes it harder for them to take your feedback seriously. Maintain a calm and steady tone, make eye contact, and clearly express your concerns. This approach shows that you are in control and focused on addressing the issue, not attacking the person. 2. Scold kindly and calmly   The more emotionally you scold someone, the less likely they will listen to you. This is because when we are scolded with anger or frustration, we tend to feel blamed or attacked and become unwilling to listen to the other person's opinion. So it's important to control your emotions so that they can understand you. Therefore, you should remai...
